What Happens Whilst Your Greyhound Pup is Being Broken in?

If you have become involved in greyhound syndication and purchased a greyhound pup with your mates then you probably have a few questions about how your pup is trained. One of those is probably what is actually involved in ‘breaking in’ your greyhound.

All greyhounds are broken in between 12-14 months. This is an important process leading up to your greyhound’s potential racing career so you should ensure that it is performed by an expert. Breaking in involves teaching your greyhound to get in the box, and then teaching your greyhound to chase the lure.

Teaching your greyhound to get in the box involves training your greyhound:

1. To make sure your greyhound is not scared of the boxes- The box is a confined space and in the beginning your greyhound may be scared. Your greyhound may require repetitive pushing through the box to make them understand that they will eventually come out the other side.
2. To make sure your greyhound does not turn around in the box- Once you have put your greyhound in the box, you do not want it to turn around.
3. To make sure your greyhound gets in a position ready to jump- This is the final training related to the boxes. There is no point in having your greyhound comfortable in the box if it is not ready to jump when the gates open.

After your greyhound has been taught how to ‘box’ they will be taught to chase the lure. Obviously, to be successful you want a dog that will chase the lure quickly.
