There are basically 2 kinds of SIM cards: – Local network SIM cards and International SIM Cards. Some local network SIM cards work much like International SIM cards do albeit with some disadvantages.

That’s why spending a little bit of cash up front to get good International SIM cards before you travel will go a long way to helping you save costs and headaches that are bound to come your way if you depend on local network SIM cards while abroad.

Another disadvantage of using local SIM cards as if they are International SIM cards is that you will have to face the extra trouble of having them ‘unlocked’ for you to be able to enjoy using them outside of your home country. While unlocking SIM cards is not all that stressful in some countries, doing the same can be a nightmare in other countries.

A major advantage of using mobile phones today is being able to control your spending by using pre-paid SIM cards. So, when planning to get an International SIM card, you should aim to get one that is pre-paid, as opposed to post paid cards that may force you to run up your phone bill into ridiculous amounts, especially where roaming is not so cheap.

Lastly, while you can roam with some local SIM cards, the cost of doing so might end up putting you off using your mobile phone while abroad. Good International SIM cards however that allow for cheap or free roaming will take better care of you and your wallet.
