Those business people in the know, know the importance of networking and, more importantly, they enjoy it. They understand the importance of maintaining good professional relationships, largely through networking. Networking is defined as the creation, development and use of personal contacts for mutual benefit or the benefit of others.
The practitioner needs to ensure time is included in their working week for various types of business networking such as:
• Keeping in touch with their business contacts- through informal activities such as periodic coffee or lunch together, and through attending professional functions together;
• Joining professional bodies- Networking is no-longer defined by the shady types sitting around in plastic chairs and trying to sell crap to other people and constantly chasing a sale. Business networking bodies are about helping other people and developing long term contacts.
• Work for charities and not-for-profits- Often overlooked as a networking possibility, and definitely not the only reason you should volunteer, but if you volunteer in an area you are passionate about you give yourself the opportunity to meet contacts with the same value set as you do. The perfect partner!
• Online Business Networking- Getting online is the new forefront for business networking. You can find forums that are related to area of business which mean that you can easily networking with people online. There are probably also blogs that you can go and leave comments on. If there is not a blog in your area of business you should start one and position yourself as the expert. This also gives other interested parties that opportunity to come by your blog and network with you.
Many people view business networking as a chore. This is silly thinking. Networking is a great way to meet new and interesting people who may become new friends.
